Nose Piercing at 41

I remember when I was 19 I thought I wanted extra ear piercings, then an eyebrow ring, and then I would allow myself to get some kind of tattoo.  I got the extra ear piercings (one in the lobe and one cartilage).  The extra lobe piercing did not heal well and the cartilage one produced this tiny ball of something when the piercing was temporarily removed.  Both piercings closed within a day.  The want to ever have a piercing again disappeared at that time.

When I was 21-ish, I had my boyfriend at that time, design a mash-up of an Athena helmet with Aries rams horns.  This was tattooed on my back and I still love it.  I have since gone on to get two more tattoos with the same theme:  an owl on my wrist and a snake on my ribs.  I still love those tattoos as well.

Randomly before my 41st birthday this year, I ordered some fake nose rings from Amazon.  I was happy because I am currently on a rose gold 'thing' and it included a rose gold option.  Not 100% sure who I saw with a nose ring where I thought I should try one out on my nose.  Maybe Katie Holmes?  Maybe some other celebrity my age?  Heck, maybe even someone my age that I know?  I want to remember but I can't at this time.

The fake ones arrived during the week, I put it in my nose, and it looked pretty darn adorable.  I sent a picture to my cousin-in-law and she agreed.  Lisa got home from work and noticed it within a minute.  There was shock and confusion, and then quickly she stated that she liked it (she thought it was real)!  After I let her in on the fact that it was fake, she continued to state how it looked 'right' on me.  I actually had to agree!

After posting the fake one online and getting a good response, and getting a recommendation for a piercer, I picked up the phone and schedule an appointment (the hardest part of this whole thing, oddly).  I was hoping to get it scheduled for after Betty and Mary's memorial service, but I did get it scheduled for the next day.

Lisa and I spent the afternoon in Little Five Points eating a White Pizza at Savage and then visiting a record store.  Since we got there early, we got a smoothie at Arden's Gardens and then went for a walk around Freedom Park.  It was close enough time to line up and call for entry into Kolo, so we finally made our way to Euclid Ave.

I originally scheduled the appointment for one piercer but I guess she was busy so I got Kyle.  Good guy.  The whole appointment was enjoyable enough.  Did it hurt?  Yes.  Yes, it did.  Did it hurt worse than the tattoos?  Maybe not the first three lines of the wrist tattoo (owl) but definitely more than the back and ribs. The part that hurt the worst was when the needle was moving in and out of the piercing.  The right eye did leak a bit.

Am I happy with the result?  Yes!  The first two days brought some redness and a tiny couple of scabs.  So far, almost three weeks later, it is healing like a champ...I think.

Other than vanity, why did I get the piercing at 41?  41?!  The only thing I can come up with is that it is a way to control pain.  There has been a lot that I haven't been able to control over these past few years, maybe this was me doing something pain that I fully have control over?  Middle age freakout?  I don't know.  Vanity is strong though.  :D

My Dream Work Day

With Naomi Judd's recent passing, it has me thinking about my own depression and anxiety.  Have I hidden in my own house for two years?  Kind of...especially these last two years during the pandemic.  I'll admit, it was nice.  It is also nice to be out of the house as well.  I am grateful that I do not need to leave the house every day though.   What does my life look like when depression and anxiety take a backseat?  It has to start with the day before, right? 7:00 - 8:00 PM:  Enjoy the day by sitting with my beautiful wife in the living room with our tiny family while watching a recorded program or Wheel of  Fortune followed by Jeopardy.  Of course, getting a few of the puzzles and answers correct doesn't hurt. 8:00 - 9:00 PM:  Getting the bed ready; take meds; wash face/brush teeth; get workout clothes and work clothes ready for the next day; clean kitchen; pick up stuff off the floor and flat surfaces; let the dogs ou...

Aloe Vera Plants

I have tried to grow Aloe Vera plants in the past and it was a failure.  I do remember a few people having aloe plants growing up:  my maternal grandmother and a family in the neighborhood. It was definitely my grandmother that introduced me to putting aloe on any kind of wound: scratch, splinter, sunburn, etc.  I think her aloe grew on her screened-in porch.  This was the same area with the porch swing and the patio table where I had a few birthday parties.  I do remember 'snapping beans' on this screened-in porch.   My grandmother had a pretty good-sized garden that paralleled the driveway up to her yellow house on the hill.  I think most of the green beans came from this garden.  I think.  Not 100% certain but there is a good chance.  My grandmother, mother, and I would sit on the screened-in porch and break off a top of the green bean, pull the thread, flip, break off the other end, pull the thread, and then snap the beans...
